LAYING HENS
Laying hens are ideal for the first time or novice keeper. They are fully vaccinated and we worm them before they go off to their new homes. They have good temperaments, ideal for children, and are hardy and easy to do.
POINT OF LAY Laying hens are usually sold at point of lay (POL) which is said to be around 20 weeks. Many things can affect a bird coming into lay such as weather, daylight hours plus other environmental factors. Moving to a new home or a change in routine can also affect birds coming into lay. A bird will come into lay from 20 weeks plus so anytime beyond this is normal. All birds are little individuals and will all come into lay at different times... they'll lay when they are ready.
Once in lay they should lay you a good 300+ eggs per year. They don't lay every day, they sometimes have the occasional day off! BUT should lay for a good three years or so before tailing off.
We find the average lifespan of our laying hens is around 5 to 7 years.
The laying hens we have are all equally as good layers and temperament wise. You can clip wings to stop them disappearing into the neighbours gardens, or if your brave enough we can show you how to do it.
We have a good mix of hens at home- sometimes we have some for sale, please ring and ask.
Run your mouse over the pictures to find out what types they are.
